A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design Education
A historic building that was dark for 10 years has been given a new future, as a place to nurture the dreams and futures of young creative people.
Now an educational complex devoted to creativity, The Center for Design Education is a mixed-use facility with academic space for CCS’s design schools, student housing, cafeteria, shared public space and conference center, tenant lease space, and the Henry Ford Academy School for Creative Studies, a charter school focused on art and design. New construction includes a gymnasium and three new entrances to the facility.
Following the guidelines for historic structures defined by the National Park Service, the team allowed the existing structure to influence the design direction; resulting in a modern interpretation of this historic building complete with a stunning contrast of elements, color palettes and materials. Façade and structural repairs, safety and infrastructure upgrades of stairways and elevators and installation of comprehensive, energy efficient mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems provided exceptional operational efficiencies and cost savings to CCS.
