The development of this $225 million addition to the Kahn-designed Mercedes-Benz M-Class body, paint and assembly shop involved a highly integrated planning process. During this 1.8 million sq. ft. expansion project, Kahn worked with Kohlbecker Gesamtplan GmbH, a German consultant that served as master planners, and presentation and study experts. Integral to helping achieve its desired results was the employment of cutting-edge 3D modeling tools during the design process. Working with SpeediKon and Tricadd, the Kahn project team provided Mercedes-Benz U.S. International (MBUSI) with an exact 3D replica of the new plant. This tool allows the client to better visualize how the construction project would proceed. The replica aided MBUSI in its initial planning efforts, and can be applied to future planning and expansion efforts as well.

The program for the new plant included a new body shop, paint shop, paint mix building, assembly shop, administration offices, cafeteria, locker rooms, and expansion of the facility’s existing energy center.
