Corktown Health, Hazel Park Clinic

Hazel Park, Michigan

From the moment a visitor walks through the door, Kahn wanted to be sure the environment embodied Corktown Health’s goal of making people feel welcome.

Though in-depth meetings with end users, medical practitioners, and key stakeholders, the Kahn team evaluated existing operations to find opportunities for added efficiency. With careful analysis of patient flow, required support spaces, duration of visit, and public/private separation, the team developed a plan that kept patient-focused areas at the forefront and ensured patients don’t need to “backtrack” through a maze of hallways to get to their next destination.

The design team worked carefully with Corktown Health, in conjunction with Kahn’s Applied Research Specialist, to ensure design decisions were rooted in reality-based solutions. Evaluation of space layout and proportion, access

to daylight, lighting strategies, sense of privacy, and materiality all culminated in a carefully curated facility that encourages inclusive, equitable healthcare.

Sustainability is also a top priority of the new center. As a first step, by utilizing an existing building, the overall environmental impact was greatly reduced when compared to new construction. Furthermore, by adding additional insulation, air/vapor protection, thermally efficient glazing, updated MEP systems, LED lighting, and low/no-VOC materials, the project has helped to ensure the building operates in a sustainable, responsible manner as it relates to occupant wellbeing.
