Wrapping around the Heritage Center, which houses Erie Insurance's original headquarters, and positioned across from the Perry Square Building, the seven-story Thomas B. Hagen Building connects past and present, reinforcing Erie Insurance's longstanding presence in downtown Erie. The building's tiered design respects the architectural scale of nearby buildings, offers views of Lake Erie, and embraces the character of the surrounding community.

Green Roof Design

The building incorporates over 19,000 square feet of vegetated roof to reduce stormwater runoff, reduce the heat island effect, create seasonal views, and provide habitat space for wildlife. Hardy sedums and tall ornamental grasses on each roof provide color year-round, creating a strong visual character for employees on higher floors. One roof garden is designed as an employee gathering space to promote collaboration and give employees multiple options for where to work.

Mechanical Systems

Mechanical systems were designed with energy recovery wheels that exchange heat and moisture between the exhaust air stream and the incoming ventilation air stream. The heating hot water and chilled water systems are designed to maximize energy efficiency. During colder weather, the cooling towers associated with the chilled water system generate chilled water through a heat exchanger to cool interior building spaces. Building ventilation units include enhanced filtration to provide a cleaner workspace.

Interior Design

Inside, flexible collaboration zones and an open atrium create a cohesive environment that fosters community among employees and integrates the building with the city. This expansion redefines Erie Insurance's campus, illustrating how Albert Kahn's thoughtful design transformed the company's historic grounds into a forward-looking, vibrant headquarters.
